Summary of Qualifications
Bhishma Subedi, Executive Director of ANSAB, has 20 years of experience in participatory conservation and rural development programs, research, policy analysis, university teaching, and networking. He has designed over 40 development and research projects and led the implementation of over 30 projects including those with multiple donors and partners in Asia; developed strategies, methodologies and tools; taught University courses; supervised Masters and PhD research; and monitored and evaluated conservation and development programs. Subedi has received a Ph.D. in Forestry from Kumaun University, an M.S. in Forest and Environmental Sciences from Yale University and a B. S. in Agriculture from Tribhuvan University, Nepal. He has over 50 published articles, books, practical manuals, guidelines and toolkits, and over 60 research/ technical reports.
Thematic areas of his works include community-based natural resources management, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem services, climate change – REDD+, community forestry, participatory biodiversity monitoring, access and benefit sharing, land tenure and property rights, non-timber forest products, agro-forestry, sustainable forest management, certifications, subsector analysis, business development services market, value chain analysis and development, marketing information system; evidence based policy analysis, constituency building and multi-stakeholders facilitation.
His research include community forestry, livelihoods, enterprise-based biodiversity conservation, access, land tenure and property rights, NTFP enterprises, ecosystem services, marketing, subsector and value-chain analysis; developed a sustainable rural development approach and practical strategies combining environmental, social and economic interventions that conserve biodiversity, create jobs and provide income for rural poor in remote but resource-rich areas; developed strategies for community-based enterprise oriented biodiversity conservation in ecologically sensitive areas in the Himalaya of Nepal; and developed methods for developing and profiling community based NTFP enterprise options.
The outcomes through his organized programs are noteworthy in bringing positive changes in policies; meaningful improvement in the quality of life of tens of thousands of the poor; and environmental conservation of thousands of hectares of forest and meadows. He has been recognized as the Champion of the Asia-Pacific Forests by the Food and the Agriculture Organization of the UN, and honored with the Best Paper Award by the International Congress on Ethnobiology and the Most Innovative Development Project Award by the Global Development Network.
